How does rice save my phone that fell into water

Somebody told me putting my phone into a bag of rice if it falls into water can help save the phone. My phone is a Samsung A50. It’s supposed to be waterproof but I opened it once when I changed the screen so I don’t think it’s waterproof again if it ever was. Right now the phone is inside a bag of rice. Any hope?

When a phone falls into water, putting it into a bag of rice is a common DIY method believed to help absorb moisture and potentially save the device. The idea is that the rice acts as a desiccant, drawing moisture out of the phone. Here’s a general overview of the process:

1. Remove from Water: Retrieve the phone from the water as quickly as possible to minimize damage.

2. Turn Off the Phone: Power off the device immediately to prevent short circuits.

3. Remove Battery (if possible): If your phone has a removable battery, take it out to reduce the risk of electrical damage.

4. Dry Excess Water: Gently pat the phone with a dry cloth or towel to remove excess water.

5. Place in Rice: Submerge the phone in a bag or container of uncooked rice. Rice is believed to absorb moisture and aid in the drying process.

6. Wait: Leave the phone in the rice for at least 24-48 hours. Some suggest longer periods for better results.

7. Check and Power On: After the waiting period, check the phone for any signs of moisture. If it looks dry, attempt to power it on.

I did this with my phone and it’s working till date.

However, it is important to note that while the rice method is a common practice, it’s not foolproof. The effectiveness can vary, and there’s no guarantee it will rescue a water-damaged phone. Additionally, modern smartphones often have internal components that are more water-resistant, but this doesn’t make them entirely waterproof.

For a more reliable solution, consider using dedicated drying agents like silica gel or seek professional help. If your phone has been submerged in saltwater or contaminated water, it’s advisable to clean it thoroughly with fresh water before attempting the drying process.
